How can I find meaning in my life?
People try to think about their life and start to feel the empty void: the meaninglessness of everything, the unimportance of a temporary existence.
They try to figure out how to add meaning: what kind of work to do? How to serve others? What do I enjoy?
But the truth is: meaning does not live in thoughts or big concepts. Meaning lives in small, everyday things. It lives in the steps you take to switch on a light; it lives under your fingers when you pet your cat; it lives in the sounds of raindrops falling on a tin roof.
The only way to live a meaningful life: a life filled with meaning, is to be aware of each moment, of each raindrop, of each breath. Our life becomes meaningful to a degree of which we are willing to become aware.
Therefore, a meaningful relationship can only happen between two aware beings. Animals are always aware, always in a moment (unless they are deeply traumatised as it sometimes happens). So are small children. A relationship between an aware grownup and an animal or aware grownup and a child is therefore always deeply meaningful.
All relations that happen between 2 grownups, on the other hand, are a slightly more difficult matter. You can be aware of the present moment and therefore, the way you feel and take in life, in that moment, is meaningful. And it will definitely have an impact on the environment and the atmosphere and on what may or may not become possible in that moment. But for the relationship itself to become meaningful, the other person also needs to be awake and present, in the moment, sensing, feeling, inspiring… Only then can we witness the Game of Light, where two aware beings start to inspire each-other higher and higher and support each other through moments of deep healing.
Yes.
The meaning is always there, living in the small things of each moment. To live a meaningful life is to connect with that field, to find the meaning from where it is, and not endlessly chase it where it can never be found.
The only way to live a meaningful life is to become fully present.
